We work to support dance artists to play multiple roles – as teacher, maker, performer, producer and more. We respect all aspects of the artist’s practice and value how these different dimensions of their work inform and refine each other.
We aim to create the conditions for artists and the artform to evolve in tandem, propelling each other. Our work enhances the way that artists work within their own projects and with companies, venues, students, audiences and the wider public. By doing so we foster greater diversity; not only in terms of aesthetics or style, but also how work is made, by whom, with whom and for whom.
We cultivate and champion new kinds of relationship between student and teacher, choreographer and dancer, artist and academic, theory and practice, process and product, dance and other disciplines.
We value dance as a form of knowledge, and as a method of generating knowledge. We champion the distinct contribution of research through (rather than merely about) dancing, teaching and making.
Our classes, research spaces and workshops are influenced by somatic practices and a wide range of dance forms. This means that our approach to learning new movement skills is by focusing on what movement feels like, rather than by imitating an ideal form. Somatic practices are inherently accessible to people of all physicalities.
